Snowdon Mountain Walks

Part of our positive activities programme is to offer alternative and exciting activities that young people may not get a chance to do otherwise. Climbing Snowdon is a real challenge in which young people test themselves, their ability and their mental attitude, its exciting and strenuous in a hard environment, but when the young people make it to the summit they are so proud and full of confidence. We are using the Snowdon climbs as part of our fundraising activities for various charities, this gives the young people a purpose and something to aim for whilst having a great adventure.

SPACE Scheme Summer Activities

staffsspace

Space was originally an activities scheme led by police in Staffordshire during the 80s and 90s aiming to engage with young people. The new version of Space provides fun activities for 11 – 17 year-olds during the school summer holiday. The programme is co-ordinated by the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner and was delivered by a wider collaboration of public and voluntary organisations.

Staffs CYP were a partner that delivered many exciting and varied activities to young people in the Staffordshire Moorlands area through the Targeted Services Local Support Teams. By recognizing young people who need extra support through the summer holiday period and offering them activities that developed their personal and social development whilst having fun.

World War One Ceramic Mural

A positive partnership project funded by Kidsgrove Town Council and Kidsgrove Rotary Club, the World War One ceramic mural was the idea from ourselves and the famous local artist Phillip Hardaker.

To commemorate the First world war in a positive and respectful way we worked with many people from the kidsgrove community where each person made a tile, decorated it which eventually made a huge mosaic which was unveiled on the Kidsgrove Library wall. All the people involved and the community are very proud of what is seen as a mark of respect for those who were associated with the War.

Positive Community Involvement

Working in partnership with various agencies and The Kings CE School Kidsgrove many young people have contributed to making ‘their’ community a better place as well as showing that young people can do positive work.

From transforming waste land into gardens, planting projects, litter picks, charity collections, giving hampers to the elderly at Christmas, cooking community meals and much more, all these young people have given something back to their community to make it a better place for all.

National Citizenship Service

Staffs CYP were a key partner in delivering two NCS programmes.
NCS is a national programme that develops skills through adventure and social action over a week long residential, three skill days and a 30 hour social action project. Young people aged 16 to 18 take part in various exciting activities gaining new skills, making friendships, building confidence and self – esteem whilst having fun and doing something constructive with their time.

The Birks Outdoor Centre

As part of the Citizenship programme with The Kings C of E School Kidsgrove, we at Staffs CYP were asked to support the School with a weeks residential in May with 15 pupils at the Birks Centre in the Duddon Valley, The Lake District.

The young people had a great week taking part in teambuilding activities, local walks on the fells,  For many of the students the trip to the Birks was their first stay away from home and it was clear that ‘the Birks experience’ helped to develop a very positive working relationship between the students and the members of staff who led the residential group, often a residential such as this develops various skills in young people such as Leadership, teamwork, confidence and self esteem, as well as fun and friendship.

Use of the outdoors makes a major contribution to physical and environmental education and enhances many other curriculum areas. It contributes to personal growth and social awareness and develops skills for life and the world of work. Outdoor activities provide valuable alternative, often non-competitive, avenues for achievement, as well as opportunities to develop independence and self-reliance. Through successfully facing up to the challenges which outdoor activities provide, overcoming fears and apprehensions along the way, young people make major strides in confidence, with implications for all aspects of their development.
